THE HOME The design of the main and guest houses is essentially Hill Country with southwestern accents. The house was built by an engineer-owner so it would stand up to extremes of wind and weather and meant to be rock-solid, honest, firm and protective, an extension of the Hill Country it sits on. The house and guest house together are ideal for a couple or a large family. The main house has a huge master suite and one other bedroom, so guests or children could be accommodated in the nearby guest house, which has 2 bedrooms and a small kitchen. The main house is ideal for 2, 20 or 100 people at a time. It has both spaces that are intimate for a couple and larger spaces, both indoor and outdoor, that flow together for entertaining large groups. Porches are an integral and important part as both shelter from the sun and extensions of the indoor entertaining areas. There is no very large room, rather a series of connected spaces where friends can choose to gather either inside or out. The master suite was designed with the idea that, after a day spent outdoors, it should be restful and inviting because of its sense of solidity and tranquility. In testimony to the welcoming nature of this home, those who have spent the night here say that they have never slept as well anywhere else. At 1400 feet above sea level with no light sources nearby, the stars at night are stunning—“big and bright”, like they’re supposed to be in Texas, but aren’t in the cities any more. |
THE LAND A 5th generation Texan saw the vast potential and promise for the rebirth of this 250 acres of Texas Hill Country and he subsequently devoted 14 years toward restoration and conservation efforts here. He revitalized the natural grassland by reseeding native grasses and fertilizing them to help them take hold. He brought back the wet-weather creeks by clearing nearly all of the cedar and other water-greedy vegetation that had formerly been drawing out much of the life-giving moisture. Today the improved land supports a tremendous amount of lush native grasses, far more than any other land in the area. As the grasses came back, an astonishing array of indigenous wildlife came back with it, including white tail deer, Rio Grande turkeys, quail, 4 kinds of doves, ringtails, raccoons, foxes, etc. It also supports a domestic group of longhorns, goats and other animals at the pleasure of the owner. The grass on the ranch, together with the improvements, are a cattleman’s dream. The deer and other abundant wildlife will all bring pleasure to the serious cattleman or the gentleman rancher. The Headquarters with the sophisticated, beautifully finished house and guest house are certain to appeal to a lady as a wonderful place to live or just visit. |
